The movie was Missing, which is about about an American man kidnapped during the Pinochet coup in Chile. True story, actually. Very sad.
The book was Atonement, by Ian McEwan. I was rereading it, actually. I think you'd like it, Becky, if you haven't read it already. It's also really depressing.
I really enjoy sad things, apparently. Does that make me a sad person?
